What is Azûrak

Azûrak is a side-on running and jumping game laid out as a single map seventy-four thousand paces long, with no level select and no loading between anything. You start in the Pale Dunes and you run east: through mirage flats, a firefly wood, ember crypts, a magma gullet, obsidian fields, a frosted vale, a starlit ziggurat, a bone marsh, an ashen city, and eleven more, each with its own sky, ground colour and darkness. At the end of each land stands a gate, and every gate is shut until you work out what opens it.

The gates are the game. Some want levers — one, two or three, scattered back across the land you just crossed, and one of them often at the bottom of a well you have to climb out of. Some want braziers lit in the order they flashed at you. Some want a stone guardian pushed along the ground and onto a plate. Three of them open on a timer and start closing the moment they are up, so the last lever you pull decides whether you make it. Between the gates there are stone sanctuaries that save your place, gems to pick up, brass champions worth an extra heart, and a drop at the end of it all: Vazharûn, the Hollow Vizier, floating over the Hollow Throne with the Ember Crown behind him.

How to play

  1. Run with the arrow keys or A and D, jump with Space, W or the up arrow, and press jump again in the air for a second jump. Attack with J or X, dash with Shift or K, and press E or Enter at a lever or brazier. On a phone the two movement buttons sit bottom left and the four action buttons bottom right.
  2. The dash is short and makes you briefly untouchable, which is how you cross spikes and lava and how you leave a charging boss. It costs stamina and needs about half a second to come back, so it is an escape and not a way to travel.
  3. Walk into a stone sanctuary and it lights: that is where you come back if you fall. You lose nothing on a fall except the clock — no gems, no gates, no items — so the sanctuaries are worth a detour and there are two in every land.
  4. Kill a brass champion and it leaves an Ember Heart behind: one more heart, permanently. There are seven of them along the road, and the last fight is much shorter with eleven hearts than with four.

Strategies that work

  • On a timed gate, pull the far levers first and leave the nearest one for last. The gate needs about a second and a quarter to grind open and then holds for four to five seconds, and the nearest lever is about two thousand paces from the gate — enough, but only if you sprint straight there and dash whenever it recharges.
  • In the boss arena, stand between eighty and a hundred and ten paces from the Vizier and jump. Closer than about fifty and you take contact damage; further than a hundred and twenty and your swing misses. In that band you can jump-attack him all day without being touched.
  • After the Vizier slams the ground he stays down for about a second, low enough to hit standing up. That is the free window: two or three swings every slam, and you never have to trade hits for it.
  • The wells look like a hole to fall down and they are — the lever is at the bottom. The way back out is the ledges alternating up the two walls; jump, grab the lip when you are close to it, and press up to climb. From the tenth land onward there are spikes at the bottom, so drop along the wall, not down the middle.
  • The stone guardians only move while you push them along flat ground, and they stop at a step higher than about forty. Push from the side that faces the plate and you cannot lose one — they are held to their own stretch of ground on purpose.

A little history

The continuous side-on world — no level list, no loading, the whole game one map you re-cross as you find new ways past old obstacles — comes out of the exploration platformers of the late eighties, and the thing that keeps the form alive is how cheaply it turns geography into memory. You pass a wheel with empty sockets, a plate with no weight on it, a brazier that does not light, and each one becomes a small unanswered question you carry forward. The ground here is not tiles: it is a single line of heights generated from one fixed number, smoothed toward a per-land base, with occasional cliffs, and then flattened by hand wherever the game needs a plateau to stand a puzzle on. That fixed number is why every player gets exactly the same twenty lands in exactly the same shape. Azûrak, Vazharûn and the Ember Crown are invented for this game.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a save?

The sanctuaries save where you respawn inside a run, but the run itself is one sitting — closing the page starts you back in the dunes. Expect a first run of half an hour to an hour, more if you go after all the gems.

What happens if I die to the Vizier?

You come back at the last sanctuary, the sealed door reopens and the fight starts over with the Vizier at full health. Nothing else is lost, so it is a retry rather than a punishment — but it is the hardest part of the game and it is meant to be.

How is the score worked out?

Five thousand to start, forty per gem, a hundred and twenty per heart you still have, minus a hundred and twenty per fall and four per second on the clock. So the run that explores for gems and the run that goes straight for the throne can end up close, and falls cost about as much as thirty seconds.
