What is The Ashen Hour

The Umbra is an old hunger from below, and it has torn thirty breaches into the world. Churches kneel in ash, graveyards listen, and the last order of wardens burned years ago — all but one. Elias Crowe walks down with a rusty dagger, a borrowed name and no help coming. Each region between here and the heart of the dark is a small, crooked world of its own: chambers grown out of stone, a corridor bending away, and a barrier of bone across the neck between them that no blade opens.

The Ashen Hour is an action-puzzle descent in thirty regions. In every one there is work to finish — light braziers in the order a mural remembers, wake standing stones that toggle their neighbours, answer a riddling rock, push statues onto pressure plates, turn mirrors until the light finds every mark, align the rings of a seal, pay an altar, hunt a crowned champion — and it may be done in any order. Only when the work is done does the bone barrier crumble. Five pedestals hand out better weapons along the way, from the silver blade in region 2 to the hellfire flask in region 21, and three times the descent ends in a boss: the Mother of Ash in region 10, the Hollow Bishop in region 20, and the Umbra itself at the bottom.

How to play

  1. Move with WASD or the arrow keys. Attack towards the cursor with a mouse click, or hold F / J to keep swinging. Space dashes — you are untouchable for the length of it, and it recharges in about a second. E interacts with anything within roughly one body's reach: braziers, shards, stones, murals, mirrors, altars and statues. On a phone the left thumb drags anywhere on the floor to steer, and three buttons on the right swing, banish and dash; tap the prompt at the bottom to interact, and hold it to seal the breach.
  2. Each region lists its work in the top-left panel. Finish it in any order you like; when the last task is done the bone barrier crumbles and the corridor opens. Nothing there is on a timer, so reading a mural twice costs you nothing but points.
  3. Take weapons from pedestals with E: the silver blade (region 2), the hand crossbow (3), the warden's censer (9), the blessed scattergun (14) and the hellfire flask (21). Q or right click casts Banish, a ring of faith about two body-lengths wide that costs 40 of the blue orb and lands 55 damage on everything inside it.
  4. When the work is finished, walk into the breach seal at the far end and hold E: 1.6 seconds closes an ordinary breach, 3 seconds the last one. A region pays 300 points plus 110 for its depth, up to 1600 more for speed — eight points off for every second — and 450 on top if you took no hit at all.

Strategies that work

  • On ordered-brazier regions — 2, 9, 13, 18, 21, 25 and 29 — read the mural with E before lighting anything: one wrong brazier snuffs every flame you already lit and you begin the sequence again. The mural can be re-read as often as you need, and it never lies.
  • Banish costs 40 faith and faith only returns 10 per second, so a full ring is seven seconds of standing still. Spending it on a single shade is waste: save it for the swarm regions — 16, 19, 22, 26 and 29 — where six to ten bodies arrive at once.
  • Statues slide wherever you walk into them, so line yourself up opposite the plate before you push, not beside it. If one ends up jammed against a wall, press E next to it and it returns to where it started; no region can be lost this way.
  • The blood altar takes 25 soul or 70 faith, and it waits forever. If your health is low, step back out of the fight and let faith refill instead of bleeding — seven seconds of patience is cheaper than the walk back from a death.
  • Every region that has enemies hides one shrine, and it works once: it fills your soul back to full and adds 30 faith. Spend it after the crowned champion or the boss, never on the two or three points a crawler took off you on the way in.

A little history

Before the burning, the wardens kept the seams of the world stitched with sigils and stubbornness. The order is gone now, its halls ash, its name a caution muttered in the villages that survived it. What remains is one man with a ruined coat and a habit of finishing jobs nobody asked him to start. The Umbra does not bargain, does not speak, does not hurry. It simply waits at the bottom of thirty breaches, patient as a grave, while its shades and spitters and hollow brutes keep the stairs. The Ashen Hour is the hour when someone finally walks down to answer it — not with faith, because that burned too, but with iron, riddles and the worst of tempers.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a time limit per region?

No. The score rewards speed — eight points come off for every second you spend — but every puzzle waits as long as you need, and no timer ever ends a region for you. Reading the mural twice is far cheaper than dying.

What happens when I die?

You rise again at the entrance of the same region, with the work you had finished there undone. The points already banked from sealed regions are kept; only the current region's earnings and its unhurt bonus start over.

Can I play in short sessions?

Yes. Progress is saved in your browser after every sealed breach, and Continue on the title screen picks up at the start of the region you had reached, with your weapon and your score intact. That is also why it is not on the daily list: a daily challenge has to be one sitting for everyone, and this one is a campaign of thirty regions you are meant to put down and pick up.
