What is RUNEFORGE — Merge runes on an anvil that never refills

RUNEFORGE is a merge puzzle without the sliding. Two neighbouring runes of the same rank become one rune of the next: two 5s make a 6, two Queens make a King. They are Old Futhark letters, ᚠ through ᛇ, with J, Q, K and A at the top. Nothing replaces what you merge, so the anvil only empties: level 1 is nine runes on 3 by 3 for a target of 6, level 100 thirty-six runes on 6 by 7 with six stone blocks and the Ace.

Each level gives a move budget and nothing more: one move per merge, one per iced rune you crack. The spare margin in the header is your whole cushion — two moves up to level 26, one from 27 to 60, none on level 100. Three hints and three undos sit under the board; using none is what three stars mean. The hundred forges run through ten chapters, Cold Iron to The Ace Ascendant.

How to play

  1. Tap a rune, then an equal neighbour — or drag one onto the other. Mouse, pen and finger all work, on a phone or a desktop.
  2. The header shows level, forge target (⚒), moves left and score. You win when one rune of the target rank is left; merges above the target are refused.
  3. ★ merges with any neighbour and lifts it one rank, never with another ★. ❄ takes a tap to crack, costing a move. 🔗 stays bound until a merge happens beside it.
  4. Hint shows the smith's own next move, Undo steps one move back — three of each. Restart deals a fresh layout of the same level and refills both.

Strategies that work

  • Read the board before the first tap. Every level is a tree collapsing into one rune, so order matters more than the pairs: start with low ranks already beside their twin and build towards the corner holding the highest rune, because a merge in the wrong order strands a rune with no partner.
  • Crack the ice early and in a batch. A ❄ spends its move whenever you get to it, pays a flat 5 and never refreshes the combo timer, so cracking mid-chain drains your multiplier. A frozen rune also cannot join the merge that frees a 🔗 next to it.
  • Spend ★ on the rank with no twin: it lifts any neighbour one rank and pays 10 on top, so aim it at the odd rune left when the rest pairs off. From level 71 you carry three — keep them apart, since two ★ side by side never help each other.
  • Free bound runes as a by-product: a 🔗 opens when a merge lands in a neighbouring cell, so with two equal pairs ready, forge the one with a chained rune beside it. Late boards carry eight, and one holding a rank's only partner is a dead end.
  • Score lives in the combo: a merge pays (5 + the new rank) × combo, climbing one per merge to ×9 and falling back 5.5 seconds after the last. Plan while the anvil is cold, then run the chain fast and save the speed for high ranks — a King at ×9 is 162 points against 18.

A little history

Merge puzzles became a genre on phones around 2014: a sliding grid, equal numbers fusing into their double, a new tile after every swipe. RUNEFORGE keeps the fusion and drops the sliding — the grid never moves, nothing spawns, and each of the hundred levels is a finite set of runes announcing the rank it must end on. New here are the ice, the bound runes and the stone blocks, and a fairness checked rather than claimed: the generator grows each level backwards from its target and replays its own recorded solution before accepting the board. Of 1200 levels generated, 1200 played through. The runes are Old Futhark, a real alphabet cut across northern Europe from the second century to the eighth. Written for puzzle-me.com.

Frequently asked questions

Does every board really have a solution?

Yes, and it is checked, not assumed. Each level grows backwards from its target rune with the steps recorded, and the generator replays that recording on the finished board under every rule that could break it. A level whose solution fails is thrown away.

How is the score worked out?

Each merge pays (5 + the new rank) × your combo, plus 10 if a ★ was involved, and ice pays a flat 5. Winning adds 30 per unused move, 100 more for no hint and no undo. Level 1 lands near 505, level 50 near 2200, level 100 between 3400 and 4100.

Is the daily challenge really the same for everyone?

Yes. The site turns the UTC date, as plain text, into one integer with a 32-bit FNV-1a hash and hands it to the game. That number picks the level of the day — always between 6 and 65 — and seeds the board: which runes are dealt, where the stones fall, which arrive iced, bound or wild.
